Why I Started Speaking on Background Screening: Real Lessons from 20 Years Behind the Screen

After twenty years in the background screening and drug testing industry, I’ve learned something important — most people want to do the right thing, they just need someone to help make sense of it all.

That’s really how my journey into speaking on background screenings began.

Over the years, we’ve answered thousands of questions from HR managers, safety professionals, and volunteer leaders. Most weren’t trying to cut corners — they were trying to understand how to stay compliant, why certain rules exist, and what those results really mean for their people and their policies.

Somewhere along the way, I realized our role had become much more than running reports. We weren’t just providing data — we were providing clarity. It became clear that our experience could help others feel more confident navigating the complex world of background checks, drug testing, and compliance. So, I took those everyday conversations, real-world lessons, and hard-earned stories… and brought them to the stage.

From the Desk to the Podium

I never set out to become a speaker. But after years of being “the resource in the room,” it just made sense to start sharing what we’ve learned with a wider audience.

Today, I’ve had the privilege of presenting at events like PestWorld 2024, the NC SHRM State Conference, the Pest Sure Safety & Risk Conference, and the National Drug & Alcohol Screening Association (NDASA). Each opportunity reinforces the same truth — people appreciate when compliance is made clear, practical, and a little more human.

Here are a few badges I received from the conference leaders after the event is over, and I am proud to say that my session was one of the largest sessions they had the entire conference.
